18th National Level Meeting between Myanmar and India 
The 18th National Level Meeting between Myanmar and India was held on 28th -29th December, 2012 in New Delhi. The Indian delegation was led by Mr. A.K Mangotra, Secretary, Border Management, Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India. The Myanmar delegation was led by Brig. Gen. Kyaw Zan Myint, Deputy Minister, Ministry of Home Affairs, and Government of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar. 

Recalling the shared culture and traditionally close relationship between India and Myanmar, Mr. Mangotra expressed India’s commitment to strengthen the cooperation between the two countries to eliminate the nexus between the drug trade, arms smuggling and extremism/terrorism. Mr. Mangotra sought Myanmar’s cooperation for co-ordinated patrolling along the Indo–Myanmar border and dismantling IIGs camps in Myanmar for peace and economic prosperity in the region. 

Brig. Gen. Kyaw Zan Myint reiterated the assurance that Myanmar would never allow insurgents and negative elements to use its own territory for activities inimical to its neighbour India 

. Both sides discussed and agreed to cooperate closely on issues like insurgent Groups along the border, arms Smuggling & drug trafficking, border management issues, Myanmar Fishermen in A&N jails, illegal smuggling of wild life parts, inspection and verification of pillars etc 

. Both sides expressed satisfaction over opening of a third Border Liaison Office (BLO) between Changlang, India and Pangsau, Myanmar. Both the leaders emphasized on nurturing BLOs to promote cooperation between law enforcement agencies of both the countries for peace and tranquility along the border. It was decided to open a fourth BLO in Nagaland sector between Ukhrul, Manipur, India and Somra, Myanmar. 
India’s Rank in the Global Competitive Index
As per the latest Global Competitiveness Report 2012-13, brought out by World Economic Forum, a Swiss non-profit foundation based in GenevaIndia ranks 59th amongst 144 economies in the Global Competitiveness Index for 2012-13, as against 56th position out of 142 economies covered in 2011-12.
Dr. P. Shome Appointed Adviser to Finance Minister
Dr. Parthasarathy Shome has been appointed as Adviser to Finance Minister, in the rank of Minister of State, co-terminus with the period of office of the Finance Minister. 
Nagoya Protocol on Access and Benefit Sharing 
Nagoya Protocol on Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS) is a new international treaty adopted under the auspices of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in Nagoya, Japan in October, 2010, after six years of intense negotiations. As a megadiverse country rich in biodiversity and associated traditional knowledge, and with a rapidly advancing biotechnology industry, India has contributed effectively in ABS negotiations. The objective of the Nagoya Protocol is the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from the utilization of genetic resources, including by appropriate access to genetic resources and by appropriate transfer of relevant technologies. The Nagoya Protocol provides a transparent legal framework on how researchers and companies can obtain access to genetic resources, and how benefits arising from the use of such material or knowledge will be shared. India has signed the Nagoya Protocol on 11 May 2011 and ratified it on 09 October 2012. The number of signatories to the Protocol is 92, and so far nine countries have ratified the Protocol. These are Seychelles, Rwanda, Gabon, Jordan, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Mexico, India, Fiji and Ethiopia.  
Ranjit Sinha takes over as CBI director
Senior IPS officer Ranjit Sinha on 1st December 2012 took over as the new CBI director. A 1974-batch Bihar cadre officer, Sinha, who is also holding charge as director general Indo-Tibetan Border Police, succeeds A P Singh who retired on November 30.

The President of India Shri Pranab Mukherjee conferred Lakshmipat Singhania – IIM, Lucknow National Leadership Awards 2011 at a function in Rashtrapati Bhavan.
New Intelligence Bureau chief from 31st December 2012
Senior IPS officer S Asif Ibrahim is tipped to be the new Intelligence Bureau chief, official sources informed. Asif, a 1977 batch IPS, made it to the top slot because of his wide range of experience in covering various departments of the organisation which mainly deal with intelligence pertaining to internal security, they said. He succeeds Nehchal Sandhu who retires on December 31.
President Gives Away Rashtrakavi Ramdhari Singh ‘Dinkar’ Sahitya Ratna Samman 
The President of India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee today ( 23rd November, 2012) gave away Rashtrakavi Ramdhari Singh ‘Dinkar’ Sahitya Ratna Samman to 21 prominent writers and social workers at a function organized in Rashtrapati Bhavan. 

On the occasion, the President recalled the contribution of Shri Ramdhari Singh ‘Dinkar’ in the freedom struggle and his service to Hindi literature. He also called upon the Indian writers to bring international laurels to the country through their writings. 
Burma’s Suu Kyi Named New UN Ambassador
The United Nations announced Mayanmar's opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi as an ambassador to its program on HIV/AIDS. Suu Kyi accepted the invitation to head the program during a meeting withUNAIDS executive director Michel Sidibé.

The President of India Shri Pranab Mukherjee conferred the Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament and Development on H.E. Mr. Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, former President of the Federative Republic of Brazil at a function organized in Rashtrapati Bhavan today (November 22, 2012).

The President stated that this prestigious award celebrates the legacy of the Late Shrimati Indira Gandhi as an untiring crusader for global peace, universal disarmament and a new international economic order. He said Shrimati Indira Gandhi would be remembered for her untiring efforts at maintaining cohesion, unity and enhanced economic co-operation among developing nations. 

The President described former President of Brazil as an outstanding champion of the developing world. He stated that during President Lula’s presidency relations between India and Brazil steadily progressed and the seeds were sown of a close partnership in the IBSA, BRIC, G-20 and BASIC. 
Celebration of “Water Conservation Day” on 19th November 2012 
National Integration Day is celebrated on 19th November to mark the birth anniversary of late Mrs Indira Gandhi, the 1st woman Prime Minister of India. On this occasion Union Ministry of Water Resources has decided to celebrate “Water Conservation Day" on 19th November 2012 to create awareness regarding concern about depleting water resources & its vision for the water underlining the Ministry’s commitment to be an active contributor to the sustainability of this very important natural resource
Observance of Quami Ekta Week 
The Quami Ekta Week (National Integration week) is observed every year from 19th to 25th November, 2012 to foster and reinforce the spirit of Communal Harmony and National Integration Week. 

The Quami Ekta Week provides us an opportunity to reaffirm the values of tolerance, co-existence and brotherhood in a multi-cultural and multi-religious society. 

The National Foundation for Communal Harmony (NFCH) an autonomous organisation of the Ministry of Home Affairs also organizes a Communal Harmony Campaign week coinciding with the Quami Ekta Week. The Foundation also provides financial assistance for release and rehabilitation of children rendered orphan or destitute in communal, caste, ethnic or terrorist violence.   
Equitable Access to Justice: Legal AID and Legal Empowerment
Dr. Ashwani Kumar, Minister of Law and Justice, will inaugurate and deliver the key note address at a 2-day International Conference on “Equitable Access to Justice: Legal Aid and Legal Empowerment” here tomorrow. The Conference is being organized jointly by the Department of Justice, Ministry of Law and Justice and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). 
Moortidevi Award for 2010 to Prof Gopi Chand Narang 
The Vice President of India Shri M. Hamid Ansari presented the “Moortidevi Award for 2010” to eminent Urdu scholar Prof. Gopi Chand Narang for his outstanding work ‘Urdu Ghazal aur Hindustani Zehan wa Tehzeeb” at a function organized by Bhartiya Jnanpith here today. He congratulated Prof. Narang for receiving this award which he so rightly deserves. He also lauded the Selection Board which has chosen a litterateur whose work fully reflects the purpose and objectives for which the award was instituted. 
National Education Day
11th November 2012 the birth day of Maulana Azad observed as National Education Day.
